Get Involved with UHNA

Dear Neighbors,

In January each year, the University Hill Neighborhood Association Executive Committee (UHNA – EC) sends a letter to Boulder City Council outlining our priorities for addressing issues in our University Hill neighborhood. (See attached for our 2020 letter to City Council.) To address those priorities, the UHNA-EC has identified a large number of tasks, in part culled from the many emails you have sent to the listserv over these past five months, all with the goal of bettering our neighborhood for everyone who lives on University Hill. Many of these tasks are already in progress. Following is the list of our 2020 UHNA Priorities and an abbreviated list of the key activities and suggestions you have shared with us (there are many additional suggestions/ideas to consider.) For each Priority, we are forming committees to continue the work on these and need your help. UHNA has long established relationships with numerous stakeholders in the Hill and will be working with them as well as in neighborhood teams to further our goals of a vibrant, diverse Hill community. We need your participation in tackling these issues and hope you will get involved. Please email uhnaboulder@gmail.com to let us know which priority (or specific activity) you would like to be involved in. 1. Reverse the alarming trend of the conversion of single-family homes to student rental properties

A. Work with Boulder Area Realtors Association (BARA) to promote Hill homes as a “great place to live." Provide hand-outs for realtors to share with prospective buyers

B. Land trust/permanently affordable housing for CU faculty/staff

C. Advocacy against investment housing creep including research and data collection. Gather 5-10 years of Uni Hill rental data

D. Monitor CU’s Housing Master Plan for neighborhood impact

2. Proactively address safety issues, code violations, and issues caused by noise, trash and over occupancy without burdening neighbors to enforce

A. Work with Boulder Area Rental Housing Association (BARHA) and landlord relations B. Close gaps, improve ordinances and enforcement processes C. Determine efficacy of neighborhood watch program, gather data on problem properties, compile stats and communicate to City D. Address additional safety issues such as COVID-19, wildfires, bears/trash and fireworks with BPD, CU and City Council 3. Support the University Hill Commercial Area Management Commission’s (UHCAMC) 2020 priorities

A. Advocate for Hill Hotel B. Support the Hill commercial area with regular communications to neighbors on events, openings, etc. 4. Continued collaboration with CU in order to foster a mutually supportive relationship

A. Actively participate in CU Restorative Justice proceedings B. Collaborate with CU Off-Campus Housing & Neighborhood Relations on student Welcome Bags, Neighborhood Ambassadors Program and on-going student outreach

C. Keep abreast of, monitor, and communicate CU-related opportunities and issues for the neighborhood 5. Increase communication among neighbors, support a "good neighbor” environment

A. Assist with UHNA website (hillneighbors.com), newsletter, Listserv and other communications to neighbors B. Create yard signs, pamphlets and social media messaging

C. Actively recruit and support Block Captains D. Support upkeep of Beach Park 6. Continue our advocacy for the preservation of the Harbeck-Bergheim House, Marpa House and other historic landmarks on University Hill

A. Monitor and give input on Marpa House modifications B. Advocate for Historic District designation for additional Hill neighborhood areas C. Support upkeep for historic Columbia Cemetery 7. Actively participate in and support Hill Reinvestment Working Group (HRWG)

No committee will be formed for this as we have UHNA representatives on the HRWG. You can learn more about their work at: https://bouldercolorado.gov/commercial-districts/hill-reinvestment-working-group We are excited to continue our important work and to ensure that the University Hill neighborhood has a voice in all matters that affect us.
