This Sunday: Picnic At Beach Park!

Memo From Grace Lutheran Church:

WHEN: August 27, 11:30 AM – 2:00

WHERE: 13th and Euclid

Grace Lutheran Church is inviting its neighbors on the hill and and university students to join in the celebration of the 80th anniversary of its founding. The party will be held at Beach Park, across the street from the church. There will be food, music, games and more! Below is some historical information about the church:

Grace Lutheran Church began as a small group of Lutherans in 1924 who held meetings at the Boulder YMCA, then located at 1231 Walnut. As the group grew in size it attracted the attention of the Lutheran Colorado District Mission, who helped the group formally organize on May 11, 1937 as Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. At that time, the new church acquired its first church building, a house at 1428 Arapahoe.

By 1947 the small congregation outgrew the house, and moved worship services temporarily to the Howe Mortuary. In 1948 the church purchased lots in the “Hill Neighborhood” at 13th and Euclid. The current church was built and dedicated in 1949.

The church congregation continued to grow, and in 1956, Grace Lutheran helped establish a new church, Mount Zion, on the north side of Boulder. Further growth of congregation, particularly students, motivated the church in 1961 to help establish the on-campus University Lutheran Assembly. In 1963 the church expanded to include new offices and meeting space. Work to acquire and install a parking lot, remodel the sanctuary and meeting spaces and to install a “Baroque Exposed Pipe Organ” was completed in 1968.

Not only has Grace Lutheran Church been a home for worship, the church and its

congregation over the years has supported and served the community in numerous ways, including: campus ministry; women’s suffrage (in the 1940’s, ahead of its time); Head Start; war refugees; Boulder Outreach; Habitat for Humanity; Harvest of Hope Food Pantry and many other worthwhile community programs. The sanctuary’s unique acoustics attracts many community music programs such as the Boulder Bach Festival, Boulder Chamber Orchestra, and numerous University student recitals. The church continues its outreach and involvement in the community today.

We invite you to celebrate our 80th anniversary with us at the picnic August 27th
